Disney+ Japan has officially announced a multi-year collaborative development partnership with The Seven, a prominent Japanese production company. This strategic alliance is set to produce original Japanese-language live-action series, specifically designed for exclusive distribution on the Disney+ platform, catering to both domestic audiences in Japan and a global viewership.

This landmark agreement signifies Disney's inaugural long-term content creation venture with a Japanese production entity for its worldwide streaming service. Under this innovative framework, Disney's creative teams will work in close concert with The Seven from the initial stages of development, leveraging their combined expertise. The Seven, established in late 2021 and owned by TBS Holdings (Tokyo Broadcasting System Holdings, Inc.), brings a wealth of experience, including previous collaborations with Netflix on acclaimed titles like “Alice in Borderland” and “Yu Yu Hakusho,” demonstrating its capacity to deliver high-quality productions.

Executives from both companies have expressed their enthusiasm for this partnership. Carol Choi, Executive Vice President of Original Content Strategy at The Walt Disney Company APAC, highlighted the growing importance of general entertainment and local original productions for Disney+ in Japan, viewing this collaboration as a natural progression of content investment. Narita Gaku, Executive Director of Content Production at The Walt Disney Company Japan, emphasized the goal of cultivating authentic, enduring, and meaningful Japanese narratives for global viewers. Setoguchi Katsuaki, President and CEO of The Seven, conveyed confidence that combining The Seven's creative prowess with Disney's extensive network will elevate Japanese storytelling to captivate international audiences. Morii Akira, Vice President and Chief Creative Officer, further articulated the mission to transform Japan's distinctive human dramas and intricate narratives into universal entertainment that resonates across cultures. This collaboration reinforces Disney+'s commitment to expanding its Japanese-language offerings, building on the success of past titles like “Gannibal” and “Disney Twisted-Wonderland: The Animation,” and solidifying Japan's status as a pivotal market within the Asia-Pacific region.

This partnership between Disney+ and The Seven embodies a forward-thinking approach to global entertainment, showcasing a commitment to cultural exchange and innovation. By blending Japanese narrative artistry with Disney's vast reach, the initiative promises to deliver stories that not only entertain but also bridge cultural divides, fostering a deeper appreciation for diverse storytelling traditions worldwide. It is a testament to the power of collaboration in creating universally resonant content, inspiring creativity and mutual understanding on a global scale.
