Dropout Reinvents Streaming with 24/7 Linear Channel

Dropout is revolutionizing its streaming approach by embracing a nostalgic yet forward-thinking strategy. Following the successful Blu-ray release of its flagship show, the platform is now embarking on a new venture: resurrecting the essence of traditional cable television. This initiative aims to provide subscribers with a continuous, curated viewing experience reminiscent of yesteryear.

Dropout Launches Continuous Broadcast Channel, Reviving Linear TV Experience

In a significant announcement made via social media on Tuesday, Dropout's CEO, Sam Reich, unveiled 'Dropout 24/7', a dedicated livestream channel set to broadcast Dropout's diverse content around the clock. The channel will debut on February 18th at 3 p.m. EST, kicking off with an extensive marathon of its acclaimed actual play series, Dimension 20. This will encompass every episode, from its inception to the latest season, Gladlands. Subsequently, Dropout 24/7 will broaden its programming to feature other fan-favorite series such as Very Important People and Game Changer, alongside deep cuts like Kingpin Katie and Ultramechatron Team Go.

Reich emphasized that Dropout 24/7 mirrors the functionality of "regular TV," where viewers could passively enjoy marathons of shows like Top Chef or get engrossed in back-to-back episodes of Law & Order: SVU. This passive consumption often led to delightful accidental discoveries of new television obsessions, a stark contrast to the deliberate selection required by on-demand streaming. The new channel seeks to recreate this sense of serendipity, allowing subscribers to stumble upon their next favorite show, such as Troopers.

While the initial announcement video was concise, a comprehensive 24/7 FAQ section on Dropout's website clarifies key details. The channel will be exclusively accessible to Dropout subscribers through the Dropout.tv application and will not, for the foreseeable future, be available on YouTube. The FAQ highlights that this new offering directly responds to subscriber requests for a broadcast TV-like viewing option. In an era overwhelmed by endless content choices, many viewers yearn for a platform that curates content for them, bringing back the comforting predictability of linear television. The success of the Game Changer Blu-ray, which teased further physical media releases, has paved the way for potential expansions. Reich hinted at the possibility of more 24/7 channels, special broadcasts, event weekends, and bonus videos if this initial venture resonates with the audience.

This bold move by Dropout signals a fascinating trend in the streaming landscape, where platforms are beginning to re-evaluate the appeal of traditional linear programming. It suggests that amidst the paradox of choice offered by countless on-demand options, there is a growing desire for the simplicity and curated experience that cable television once provided. For content creators and platforms, this could mean exploring hybrid models that blend the best of both worlds: the vast libraries of streaming with the serendipitous discovery and communal experience of linear broadcasting.
