"I'll Be Gone in June" Set for Cannes Debut After Luxbox Acquisition

In a recent announcement, Luxbox, an international sales company based in Paris, confirmed its acquisition of the drama "I'll Be Gone in June." This film, directed by Katharina Rivilis, has garnered significant attention, securing a coveted spot in the Un Certain Regard section of the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. The narrative unfolds in the year 2001, introducing Franny, a 16-year-old German exchange student who finds herself immersed in the quiet, sun-baked desert town of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Navigating the unfamiliar landscape of American high school, the relentless desert heat, and nights filled with introspection, Franny encounters Elliott, a young man whose subtle sadness mirrors her own. Amidst the tumultuous aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, a profound connection blossoms between them, reflecting a tender and unexpected romance. Jennyfer Gautier, Luxbox's head of international sales, lauded the film for its evocative portrayal of New Mexico's timeless and almost dreamlike ambiance, noting its ability to capture the emotional depth and melancholic wanderlust of youth. She also emphasized how the film's visual style transcends mere aesthetics, creating a floating sense of time that stirs a comforting wave of nostalgia. The movie is a collaborative effort by production companies Road Movies, Wolfskind Films, and 8horses, with Léa Germain and Wim Wenders among its producers. DCM will manage the film's distribution within Germany and Switzerland. Rivilis expressed her enthusiasm for partnering with Luxbox, praising their expertise and expressing confidence in their ability to introduce her film to a global audience, especially alongside other esteemed filmmakers.

The acquisition of "I'll Be Gone in June" by Luxbox for its Cannes premiere underscores the enduring appeal of thoughtfully crafted narratives that explore universal themes of youth, identity, and connection against a backdrop of significant historical events. It also highlights the festival's commitment to showcasing diverse voices and stories from around the world. The film's unique setting and emotional depth promise a compelling cinematic experience, inviting audiences to reflect on the nuances of human relationships and personal discovery.
