Lubell, a long-time resident of Sag Harbor and a native New Yorker, brings a distinguished career spanning decades in cultural and media organizations, with a focus on the dynamic intersection of artistic expression, technological innovation, and commercial viability. His previous role as executive director of the International Center of Photography saw him overseeing substantial institutional expansion and strategic transformation.

Sag Harbor Cinema Welcomes New Leader: Mark Lubell Steps In

On Thursday, April 16, 2026, the Sag Harbor Cinema Arts Center officially announced the appointment of Mark Lubell as its new executive director. This decision, made after a comprehensive national search conducted by PBR Executive Search, marks a new chapter for the esteemed cinematic institution in Sag Harbor. Mr. Lubell, deeply rooted in the Sag Harbor community and a lifelong New Yorker, brings a profound understanding of the arts and a proven track record of visionary leadership.

From 2013 to 2022, Lubell served as the executive director of the International Center of Photography (ICP), where he was instrumental in a period of remarkable growth and institutional change. During his tenure, he successfully secured over $90 million in funding to support critical expansion efforts and ensure the ICP's long-term sustainability. He also played a pivotal role in the acquisition and development of the ICP's permanent location on Ludlow Street in New York City. Under his guidance, the ICP broadened its scope to embrace new media and contemporary visual culture, solidifying its position as a leader in image-based storytelling.

Before his impactful work at the ICP, Lubell was the director of Magnum Photos from 2003 to 2011. There, he spearheaded a transformative digital initiative and organizational restructuring of the renowned photography cooperative. His innovative efforts led to the creation of new revenue streams that, within three years, accounted for more than half of the organization's total income. He also oversaw the historic sale of the Magnum New York press print archive to Michael Dell, a transaction that remains one of the largest in photographic history. For his pioneering work in multimedia and digital community building, Lubell was recognized as Innovator of the Year by American Photo.

John Alschuler, president of the Sag Harbor Cinema board, expressed enthusiastic support for Lubell's appointment, highlighting his exceptional leadership and fundraising capabilities. Alschuler noted that Lubell is expected to further strengthen the cinema's ties with the local community and schools, while also fostering the continued expansion of its highly regarded cultural programs. The board eagerly anticipates his leadership in this pivotal role.

Lubell's diverse career also includes serving as chief operating officer of Here Is New York: A Democracy of Photographs, a nonprofit established in response to the tragic events of September 11. Additionally, he is a co-founder of Vagrant Ventures, where he offers expert advice to organizations on visual strategy and audience engagement. This appointment comes as the Sag Harbor Cinema Arts Center approaches its five-year anniversary since its grand reopening on Memorial Day weekend, a significant milestone following the meticulous restoration of its historic Main Street building after a devastating fire in 2016.

Mark Lubell's appointment signifies a promising era for the Sag Harbor Cinema. His rich experience in fusing art, technology, and community engagement positions him perfectly to elevate the cinema's role as a cultural beacon. This move reflects a commitment to innovation and sustained growth, ensuring that the Sag Harbor Cinema continues to thrive as a vital hub for film and the arts for years to come.
