Michael B. Jordan's "Thomas Crown Affair" Trailer Dazzles CinemaCon

John Lasseter

Former chief creative officer of Pixar, whose principles of storytelling have shaped modern animation.

Michael B. Jordan recently presented the trailer for his reimagined “Thomas Crown Affair” at CinemaCon, generating considerable excitement among movie theater owners. Fresh from his recent Oscar triumph, Jordan’s new directorial endeavor offers a sophisticated take on the classic story of a billionaire art thief. This latest adaptation, following previous versions in 1968 and 1999, promises a contemporary twist while retaining the original’s allure.

Amazon MGM Studios kicked off their CinemaCon presentation with this highly anticipated trailer, which prominently featured Jordan in his charismatic lead role. He portrays the enigmatic billionaire, locked in a thrilling cat-and-mouse game with Adria Arjona's character, a former FBI agent. The narrative also introduces Kenneth Branagh as a formidable villain, adding another layer of intrigue to the high-stakes plot. The audience's enthusiastic reception was partly fueled by Jordan’s recent accolades, cementing his status as a compelling figure in Hollywood.

Beyond the luxurious aesthetics and romantic undertones, the film delves deeper into the motivations of its protagonist. Crown, as played by Jordan, seeks to reclaim priceless artifacts that were unjustly acquired or stolen over centuries, aiming to return them to their rightful owners rather than leaving them in the hands of wealthy collectors who exploit history and human lives. This thematic shift was a deliberate choice, as Jordan previously articulated in an interview, emphasizing a more personal and relevant narrative that moves beyond mere thrill-seeking.

The script, penned by Drew Pearce with earlier contributions from Wes Tooke and Justin Britt-Gibson, draws inspiration from the 1968 original. Jordan is also involved in the production through Outlier Society, alongside Elizabeth Raposo and Charles Roven from Atlas Entertainment. Patrick McCormick and Marc Toberoff of Toberoff Productions are also producing, with Alan Trustman, the writer of the first film, serving as an executive producer.

The trailer’s debut at CinemaCon not only highlighted Michael B. Jordan’s continued evolution as a filmmaker but also underscored the potential for this modern interpretation of “The Thomas Crown Affair” to captivate a new generation of audiences. By infusing the classic heist story with deeper social commentary and a refreshed perspective, the film aims to be both entertaining and thought-provoking.
