The Enduring Legacy of "Amores Perros"

Twenty-five years after its initial premiere, Alejandro G. Iñárritu's groundbreaking film, "Amores Perros," is set for a limited theatrical run courtesy of Mubi. This cinematic event will commence in select New York and Los Angeles theaters on June 12, followed by a broader national release on June 19.

A Pivotal Debut: From Cannes to Oscar Nomination

"Amores Perros" captivated audiences upon its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000, where it garnered the Grand Prize of the Critics' Week. This critical acclaim served as a catalyst for Iñárritu's illustrious international career. The film, which first premiered in theaters on March 30, 2001, also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film in 2001. The cast features notable performances from Emilio Echevarría, Gael García Bernal, Vanessa Bauche, and Goya Toledo.

The Mubi Acquisition and Restoration Process

Mubi, a prominent streaming service, film distributor, and production company, secured the rights for the meticulously restored 4K version of "Amores Perros" during the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The restored print, which had its premiere in the Cannes Classics selection, was a collaborative effort involving Criterion Collection, Estudio Mexico Films, and Altavista Films, with Iñárritu himself overseeing the color supervision alongside cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto.

Iñárritu Reflects on the Film's Impact

Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu expressed his excitement about the re-release, stating, "It's remarkable that these untamed stories continue to resonate a quarter-century later. I'm particularly thrilled that Mubi is presenting 'Amores Perros' once again on the big screen, especially for a new generation who may not have had the opportunity to experience its power in cinemas. This film profoundly altered the lives of everyone involved in its creation."

A Director's Illustrious Career Post-"Amores Perros"

Since the premiere of "Amores Perros," Iñárritu has achieved unparalleled success, collecting five Academy Awards. His achievements include Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay for "Birdman" in 2015, Best Director for "The Revenant" in 2016, and a special achievement Oscar in 2017 for his virtual reality installation, "Carne y Arena."

Celebrating the Anniversary: Exhibitions and Publications

The anniversary festivities for "Amores Perros" extend beyond the theatrical re-release. A special exhibition titled "Sueño Perro," showcasing previously unseen footage from the film, opened last autumn and is currently on display at LACMA until July 26. Additionally, an accompanying art book dedicated to the film was published by Mack last fall, offering further insights into its creation and impact.
