SNL U.K. Experiences Significant Ratings Decline for Third Episode Hosted by Riz Ahmed

Shonda Rhimes

Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

The third broadcast of "Saturday Night Live U.K.," helmed by Riz Ahmed, has seen a considerable decline in its audience figures, with a 42% drop compared to its inaugural episode. This latest installment drew only 130,950 viewers, translating to a 1.8% audience share. This figure represents a notable decrease from the premiere's 226,000 viewers and episode two's 205,000.

Despite the dip in overall viewership, the episode featured a cold open that garnered significant attention online, depicting U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's humorous appeal to prominent British figures for national morale boosting. Riz Ahmed's hosting debut included a monologue filled with self-aware humor regarding British societal norms and participation in various sketches covering diverse themes, from reality television parodies to historical literary society discussions, with his monologue attracting 41,000 YouTube views within 17 hours and the cold open achieving 227,000 views in the same timeframe.

In the same Saturday 10 PM slot, "SNL U.K." lagged behind competitors on free-to-air channels, such as Channel 4's "Bill Bailey: Thoughtifier" and BBC 2's "Top of the Pops 1989," which drew more than double its audience, and even further behind ITV's "The Jonathan Ross Show" and BBC 1's news broadcast, which commanded significantly larger audiences. However, it was the top-performing program on Sky 1 that day, surpassing the viewership of the preceding film, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." As the season progresses, Jack Whitehall is scheduled to host the upcoming fourth episode, with musical guest Jorja Smith.

This evolving landscape of television viewership highlights the ongoing shifts in audience engagement and the competitive nature of broadcast programming. While established shows on free-to-air channels often command larger audiences, platforms like Sky present unique challenges and opportunities for new productions. Sustaining and growing a loyal audience in this dynamic environment requires innovative content and strategic scheduling. The journey of "SNL U.K." serves as a reminder of the need for adaptability and creativity in the entertainment industry to capture and retain viewer interest.
