From Backstage Blues to Stardom: Luke Combs' Unforgettable Debut

A Difficult Introduction: The Illness That Almost Derailed a Career

Grammy-nominated artist Luke Combs recently shared a candid account of his initial meeting with country music superstar Blake Shelton. The encounter, which took place at an exclusive gathering on Ryman Hospitality Executive Chairman Colin Reed's Mississippi farm, was far from ideal for Combs. He found himself battling a severe illness, causing him to feel out of place and anxious about making a good impression on industry heavyweights like Shelton.

Feeling Like an Outsider: Battling Sickness Amidst Industry Elite

During the retreat, while music executives and Shelton enjoyed the idyllic farm setting, Combs felt like an unwelcome guest, struggling with his health. He described feeling like "the odd one out, feeling unwell," convinced that he didn't belong. The picturesque farm, which he humorously called "a redneck's paradise," was lost on him as he spent much of his time confined to the bathroom, grappling with stomach issues and downing medication.

A Career in Jeopardy: Doubts and Chicken Soup

Combs recalled the despair he felt, believing his career was over before it even began. He spent most of his time in his room, subsisting on chicken soup. This period of intense discomfort and self-doubt was a significant hurdle in what he hoped would be a career-defining event.

A Turning Point: The Campfire Performance That Changed Everything

Colin Reed, who partnered with Combs on his new Las Vegas bar, Category 10, corroborated the story, recounting Combs' sickly state. However, Reed also highlighted the dramatic turnaround. On the final night of the three-day trip, despite still feeling feverish, Combs bravely joined a campfire gathering. Reed initially anticipated a disaster, given Combs' condition.

The Birth of a Hit: "Hurricane" Leaves Its Mark

Gathering his courage, Combs picked up a guitar and addressed Shelton and the assembled executives. He revealed that he didn't even have a record deal yet, but declared that if he ever got one, the song he was about to play would be his debut single. He then launched into a performance of "Hurricane." Reed vividly remembers the moment, recalling how the entire room fell silent, struck by the raw talent and emotion. "It was unbelievable," Reed shared, describing the chills he still gets thinking about that performance. That night marked their first true connection, and "Hurricane" later became a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Country Airplay chart in 2017, featured on Combs' debut album, This One's for You.
