Chika Kisada's latest collection for Spring 2027, unveiled in Tokyo, marks a significant departure from conventional runway presentations, emphasizing a strategic focus on sales and showroom interactions. Titled 'Dehors,' this collection is a profound exploration of personal freedom and physical expression, skillfully intertwining the classic elegance of ballet with a distinct punk sensibility. Kisada, a designer known for her pioneering work in 'balletcore' long before its mainstream popularity, continues to innovate by reinterpreting foundational ballet concepts into wearable, modern fashion.

The central theme of 'Dehors' revolves around the ballet principle of opening up joints and achieving a specific physical sensation, which Kisada translates into a feeling of liberation through her designs. A prime example is her approach to corsetry. Traditionally seen as restrictive, Kisada reimagines corsets as instruments of comfort and improved posture, as demonstrated by an adjustable, apron-like piece in the opening look. This design allows for freedom of movement while flattering the figure, challenging the notion of constriction often associated with such garments, even suggesting pairing them casually with jeans.

The ballet influence extends throughout the collection in various subtle yet impactful ways. A second-skin top features a hem that flares and frills, reminiscent of a delicate tutu skirt. A pink lace blouse cleverly integrates a bodysuit gusset, designed to be layered over a thigh-slit long skirt, blending romanticism with a daring silhouette. Unexpected elements like a denim garter belt worn over jeans and a bomber jacket adorned with bursts of tulle from the arms further exemplify Kisada’s unique fusion of styles.

Footwear in the collection also carries a deep symbolic meaning. Loafers and satin pumps, punctuated with clusters of silver rings on the vamp, are designed to evoke the intense physical demands and hidden pain experienced by dancers en pointe. Kisada explains this juxtaposition as an attempt to convey the contrast between the elegant exterior of a pointe shoe and the 'grotesque' reality and 'extreme stress' endured by the foot within, hinting at the mystery, horror, and chaos concealed beneath the surface.

To inject a sense of lightness and joy, Kisada incorporates rainbow-colored beads and tiny ribbons, drawing on childhood nostalgia. This playful integration of elements presented a creative challenge for the designer: how to transform these whimsical details into sophisticated and elegant pieces. The result is a collection that is not only fashion-forward but also deeply personal, reflecting a nuanced understanding of movement, form, and emotional expression. Kisada's vision for Spring 2027 successfully marries the discipline of ballet with the rebellious spirit of punk, creating a narrative of liberation and self-expression.
