As another month draws to a close, a highly anticipated survival game is on the brink of its official release. However, 'Solarpunk,' which boasts over 1.2 million wishlists on Steam, has issued a pre-launch advisory to potential players. The developers, Cyberwave, urge future buyers to understand the true nature of the game before its June 8th debut.

'Solarpunk' Dev Team Manages Player Expectations Ahead of Launch

In a candid statement posted on Steam, Cyberwave addressed the question, "Is Solarpunk for you?" They clarified that if players are anticipating a colossal, expansive survival experience akin to recent blockbusters like 'Windrose' or 'Subnautica 2,' they might need to recalibrate their expectations.

Cyberwave, primarily a two-person team, expressed their apprehension, noting, "With 1.2 million people on the wishlist, the pressure is incredibly high. We're worried that some people might be expecting a AAA title." They emphasized that 'Solarpunk' is not a product of a large studio, nor does it aim to compete with the genre's titans in terms of scale, content, or system depth.

Instead, 'Solarpunk' is described as "a calm, cozy, focused survival craft sandbox made by a tiny team with a lot of love." The developers are committed to being transparent about what the game offers, and equally important, what it does not.

Players should anticipate "a calm survival craft experience focused on peace, creativity, and slow progression." The team highlighted that the majority of the main content can be explored within approximately 20 hours, after which the game shifts its focus to developing one's home base, engaging in farming, decorating, and pursuing personal objectives.

Key features to note include the absence of player-versus-player (PvP) combat, a world composed of a "limited set of handcrafted islands and two biomes" rather than a vast open world, and no overarching story campaign or narrative-driven quests.

To further clarify, the developers have provided an almost 10-minute video detailing the game's scope and design philosophy. Cyberwave's message is clear: "We do not want anyone to buy Solarpunk for the wrong reasons." They hope players will purchase the game for its promise of a peaceful survival crafting experience, where they can construct a comfortable home, cultivate farms, customize their environment, and explore unique islands either solo or with friends.

The developers acknowledged that if players are seeking PvP, an extensive story, endless exploration, complex combat, large public servers, or hundreds of hours of core progression, then 'Solarpunk' might not be the ideal choice. Despite these caveats, the small studio expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming support and attention their project has received. "Thank you for giving this tiny project so much attention," Cyberwave concluded. "Thank you for wishlisting, playing the demo, backing us, watching videos, sharing feedback, and believing in Solarpunk. It means more to us than we can properly put into words."

This announcement from Cyberwave is a refreshing display of honesty and transparency in the gaming industry. In an era where hype often overshadows reality, their proactive approach to setting player expectations for 'Solarpunk' is commendable. It underscores the importance of clear communication between developers and their audience, especially for indie studios working with limited resources. By openly defining what their game is and isn't, Cyberwave not only builds trust but also ensures that players can make informed purchasing decisions, leading to a more satisfying experience for those who appreciate 'Solarpunk' for its unique, cozy charm.
