Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw Productions and Universal Pictures are expanding their "No Drama" initiative, a program dedicated to nurturing emerging talent in the genre filmmaking space. This collaborative effort, now in its second iteration, partners with American Cinematheque and Beyond Fest to provide crucial support and exposure to aspiring filmmakers, enabling them to transform their short film concepts into feature-length projects.

The "No Drama" initiative, initially launched in 2024, has already demonstrated significant success. Its first cohort of filmmakers received critical acclaim for their short films at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, securing awards at various festivals and leading to agent or management representation for a substantial percentage of participants. This early success underscores the program's effectiveness in identifying and promoting promising voices in cinema.

Peter Cramer, President of Universal Pictures, expressed his enthusiasm for the renewed partnership, highlighting Monkeypaw Productions' unique expertise and passion for cultivating new storytellers. He emphasized the initiative's role in elevating diverse perspectives within the filmmaking community.

For its latest chapter, the program will award grants of $50,000 to up to three filmmakers. These recipients will be tasked with directing their submitted short film scripts, with the ultimate goal of developing these proofs of concept into full-length features. A key requirement for submissions this year is the inclusion of a feature-length treatment accompanying the short film script.

The central themes for this cycle of "No Drama" are encapsulated in the powerful phrase, "Fear is universal. Monsters are personal." Prospective filmmakers are encouraged to craft narratives that reimagine horror across different cultures, generations, and societal contexts, delving into the internal "monsters" that reside within us all. The completed short films will make their debut at Beyond Fest in 2027, with Monkeypaw and Universal holding a first-look option for further development.

She lauded the partnership with American Cinematheque's Beyond Fest as an ideal platform to provide these burgeoning writer-directors with the high-profile visibility necessary to advance their careers.

Grant Moninger, Artistic Director of American Cinematheque, reiterated the organization's belief in the importance of creating opportunities for filmmakers who will shape the future of cinema. He expressed excitement about collaborating with Universal and Monkeypaw, noting that premiering the finished films at Beyond Fest, a highly attended genre film festival, aligns perfectly with their mission to invest actively in cinema's evolution beyond just celebrating its history.

The initiative has already propelled several filmmakers to international recognition. Ariel Zengotita's "Imago" was screened at SXSW, while Jared Leaf's "Spilled Milk" garnered significant accolades, including the Audience Award at the Pan African Film & Arts Festival and the prestigious HBO Short Film Award. Leaf, along with Chandler Crump, was also featured on blkscript's "35 Rising Filmmakers You Should Know" list, a testament to their burgeoning talent. Additionally, filmmaker Helena Hawkes has transitioned into studio-level development through the Universal Writers Residency program, further showcasing the program's impact on career progression.
