Larian Studios' RPGs Maintain Strong Player Engagement Years After Launch

Mathematician and game designer who created "Magic: The Gathering," revolutionizing collectible games.

Larian Studios' role-playing game titles exhibit an impressive capacity for enduring player engagement, a notable achievement in the gaming industry. Their flagship releases, Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2, have sustained significant active player bases long after their initial launches. This sustained popularity is a testament to the games' quality and Larian's ability to cultivate a dedicated community, defying the typical lifecycle of many single-player experiences.

Baldur's Gate 3, despite being nearly three years post-release, consistently draws between 50,000 and 80,000 concurrent players on Steam alone, signifying its continued relevance and appeal. Its predecessor, Divinity: Original Sin 2, originally launched in 2017 with a peak of almost 94,000 concurrent players. While its player numbers naturally stabilized, it consistently maintained 10,000 to 20,000 concurrent users monthly. The remarkable aspect is that these games, designed primarily for single-player or co-op experiences, rival the player retention often seen in live-service games specifically engineered for continuous engagement.

Recently, both titles experienced a resurgence in player numbers, particularly Divinity: Original Sin 2, which recorded its best month for player activity since its 2017 debut. This surge coincided with Larian's announcement of a new Divinity game at The Game Awards in December 2025 and the subsequent re-release of Divinity: Original Sin 2 as a Definitive Edition on consoles. Larian CEO Swen Vincke highlighted the "incredible" sales performance of both games following the Divinity announcement, indicating a renewed interest generated by future projects and past successes.

Data from Steam charts corroborates these trends, showing Baldur's Gate 3's daily average concurrent players exceeding 100,000, with similar strong engagement expected on console platforms. More strikingly, Divinity: Original Sin 2’s average concurrent players on Steam in January surpassed 27,000, on track to exceed its previous post-launch peak of 30,000 players from March 2020. This sustained and even increasing engagement is further bolstered by discussions around the upcoming Divinity title, which promises enhanced companion interactions, improved character customization, and a revised armor system, fueling anticipation and driving players back to Larian's existing catalog.

The enduring success of Larian's RPGs, characterized by high player retention and renewed interest years after release, underscores the exceptional depth and replayability embedded in their design. Even with a new Divinity game on the distant horizon, the extensive content and vibrant modding communities of Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 ensure their continued appeal, providing players with ample reasons to keep exploring their rich, immersive worlds.
