Loma Negra: Challenges in Argentine Construction Sector Persist

Mariana Mazzucato

Economist and professor focused on government's role in innovation and value creation in the economy.

Loma Negra, a major industrial player in Argentina, continues to grapple with persistent operational difficulties, as evidenced by its recent performance. The company faces a challenging environment marked by declining sales volumes, pressure on profit margins, and escalating operational expenses. Despite these headwinds, its reported revenue and EBITDA experienced growth when converted to USD, largely attributable to currency fluctuations. However, this masks underlying issues, as the fundamental business operations are hampered by increased dollar-denominated costs for construction inputs. The current valuation, with the stock trading at roughly 15 times its average earnings over a cycle, is deemed unappealing for a company operating in the volatile Argentine construction sector. As a result, a 'Hold' recommendation is maintained, reflecting the limited potential for significant gains unless there's a substantial rebound in construction activity or a more stable currency environment, both of which remain uncertain.

Operational Headwinds and Currency Impacts

Loma Negra Compañía Industrial Argentina Sociedad Anónima (LOMA) recently published its second-quarter results, highlighting persistent challenges that have shaped its performance over the past two years. The company continues to experience a contraction in sales volumes, alongside narrowing profit margins and an uptick in operating costs. This challenging scenario is primarily driven by a subdued demand in Argentina's construction sector.

Despite these operational pressures, Loma Negra reported an increase in revenue and EBITDA when measured in U.S. dollar terms. This growth, however, is largely a consequence of currency effects rather than an improvement in underlying business fundamentals. The appreciation of the U.S. dollar has translated local currency earnings into higher dollar figures, but the operational landscape remains difficult due to rising dollar-denominated expenses for construction-related materials and services, further squeezing profitability.

Valuation Concerns and Future Outlook

The current market valuation of Loma Negra is a point of concern for investors. The stock is presently trading at approximately 15 times its cycle-average earnings, a multiple that is considered less attractive for a company deeply embedded in the cyclical and often volatile Argentine construction industry. This valuation suggests that the market may already be pricing in a degree of optimism that is not fully supported by the prevailing operational realities or the broader economic outlook.

Given the sustained weakness in construction demand and the ongoing pressure from rising costs, the upside potential for Loma Negra's stock appears constrained. A significant recovery in the company's performance would necessitate either a robust rebound in the Argentine construction sector or a more stable and favorable currency environment. Both these conditions, however, are subject to considerable economic and political uncertainties, leading to a maintained "Hold" rating, reflecting caution regarding its short-to-medium-term prospects without clear catalysts for improvement.
