This year's Art & Artists Gala, an annual gathering renowned for its elegance and style, commemorated new acquisitions and expansions to the museum's rich collection. Generously supported by Tiffany & Co. once again, the event achieved a remarkable fundraising milestone, securing over $5 million to support the museum's ongoing growth and future initiatives.

Journey into a World of Enchantment: The Gala's Immersive Experience

Attendees, escaping the evening's damp weather, were immediately enveloped by an atmosphere of classic sophistication upon entering the Great Hall. They savored fine Champagne and specially crafted cocktails featuring bourbon, cinnamon, and port, while enjoying lavish food displays and floral arrangements that evoked the lush still-life paintings of Severin Roesen. The ambiance was further enhanced by the soft glow of candlelight and rich, jewel-toned damask fabrics, meticulously arranged by the acclaimed event designer Bronson Van Wyck. Among the esteemed guests, co-chairs Ann Tenenbaum, Samantha Boardman Rosen, Dasha Zhukova Niarchos, Aerin Lauder, Amy Griffin, and Jordan Casteel warmly welcomed a distinguished crowd, including luminaries such as Annie Leibovitz, Jon Batiste, Jeff and Justine Koons, Lauren Santo Domingo, Brett Heyman, Tory Burch, Georgina Chapman, Vanessa Getty, Thelma Golden, Jeffrey Gibson, Kent Monkman, and Amy Sillman.

Amy Griffin made a significant style statement at the gala, dazzling in a magnificent gilded gown by Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli, featuring an elaborately crafted bodice made of mirrored glass shards. In a similar vein, artist Sarah Sze complemented her ensemble with earrings made of fragmented mirrors, explaining their deeper significance in relation to the event: “These pieces symbolize the breakdown of societal norms, their reassembly into novel forms, and their integration into a fresh context.” Laura Kim of Monse, inspired by Tiffany's iconic stained glass, also showcased a stunning mirrored cocktail dress. Her creation not only highlighted the masterful embroidery of her artisans but also paid homage to the evening's overarching theme of celebrating diverse creative expressions.

As if guided by a dream, a resonant dinner gong signaled the next phase of the evening. Guests meandered through the ancient Egyptian galleries, past sarcophagi and statues of ancient deities, to a breathtaking temporary exhibition at the Temple of Dendur. Illuminated by projections of peacock feathers and bathed in iridescent blues, greens, soft pinks, and bronze, the Temple offered a mesmerizing spectacle, further enhanced by elegant tablescapes featuring delicate flowers and Tiffany crystalware with gold-rimmed details. Following this exquisite dinner, guests returned to the Great Hall for a delightful array of desserts, a gourmet hot chocolate bar, and a captivating piano performance by Brandon Goldberg.

Looking Ahead: The Visionary Tang Wing and Future of Art

A significant topic of discussion was the eagerly anticipated design by Mexican architect Frida Escobedo for the museum's forthcoming Tang Wing. This new wing is set to house an extensive collection of contemporary art. Both Escobedo and Met Museum director Max Hollein expressed their enthusiasm for the opportunities this groundbreaking wing, notably the first designed by a woman, will create for emerging artistic voices. Construction on this ambitious project is scheduled to commence in the new year.
