NYU Tisch School Embraces AI in Film Education

Oscar-winning filmmaker and author whose work and commentary explore fantasy, horror, and cinema.

A prominent arts institution is integrating cutting-edge artificial intelligence into its curriculum, aiming to equip future filmmakers with advanced technological skills. New York University's Tisch School of the Arts has forged an agreement with Runway AI, granting students complimentary access to AI tools and specialized training across several of its programs. This forward-thinking collaboration specifically benefits the Hyper Cinema Lab, a cross-university venture housed within the film school, as well as the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) and Interactive Media Arts (ITM).

This initiative represents a significant step beyond conventional film education by making sophisticated AI resources readily available. Rubén Polendo, the dean of Tisch School of the Arts and a recipient of the 2025 Guggenheim Fellowship for AI and Performance, highlighted that the goal is not to standardize filmmaking but to offer diverse creative avenues. Cristóbal Valenzuela, CEO and co-founder of Runway AI and an ITP alumnus, underscored the paradigm shift, noting that access to AI tools is becoming as fundamental for today's students as cameras and editing software were for previous generations. The partnership also addresses the practical challenge of costly video-generation credits by providing them generously, ensuring that many student films will incorporate AI elements, thereby blending traditional and innovative production methods.

The program seeks to define the evolving boundaries between human-driven artistry and machine-augmented creation. Polendo emphasized the importance of exploring the ethical implications of generating original content through the convergence of film, visual media, and large language models. While some institutions may show apprehension, Tisch unequivocally embraces this future, viewing it as a core proposition for preparing students to innovate and lead in a rapidly transforming media landscape. This proactive approach by Tisch, which differs from its mainline film school’s current non-participation, positions it at the forefront of educational institutions adapting to the growing influence of AI in the arts, despite ongoing debates within both academic and industry circles regarding its role.

Embracing new technologies like AI in creative fields allows for unprecedented exploration and pushes the boundaries of artistic expression. By providing students with diverse tools and encouraging ethical considerations, educational institutions empower the next generation of creators to innovate responsibly, fostering a future where human ingenuity and technological advancement converge to tell compelling stories and shape meaningful experiences.
