Remedy Entertainment has entered the ongoing industry discourse surrounding game publishing, offering a robust defense of its partnership with Epic Games for the development and release of Alan Wake 2. This statement directly addresses recent comments from other industry figures regarding the effectiveness and fairness of Epic's publishing model.

Epic Partnership: The Unsung Hero Behind Alan Wake 2's Existence

The Genesis of a Gaming Industry Discussion

A recent debate within the gaming community was sparked when New Blood's Dave Oshry noted that offering his studio's game, Blood West, for free on the Epic Games Store surprisingly boosted its sales on Steam. This observation led to a wider conversation about the implications of platform exclusivity and promotional strategies.

Tim Sweeney's Perspective on Developer and Gamer Benefits

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney responded to Oshry's comments by emphasizing that both gamers and developers ultimately benefit from increased competition and diverse options in the marketplace, regardless of which platform temporarily gains an advantage in sales.

Larian Studios Raises Concerns About Exclusivity's Impact

However, Michael Douse, publishing chief at Larian Studios, offered a contrasting view. While acknowledging Epic's financial support for Alan Wake 2's development, Douse questioned whether keeping the game off Steam might have negatively impacted its long-term sales potential and overall financial success for Remedy.

Remedy's Resolute Defense of Its Epic Publishing Deal

Remedy Entertainment subsequently issued a strong statement asserting that Alan Wake 2's existence was solely attributable to its publishing agreement with Epic Games. The studio highlighted the fairness and efficiency of the deal, contrasting it with potentially lengthier and less equitable arrangements sometimes seen in the industry.

Prior Praises and Ongoing Partnership Strength

This isn't the first time Remedy has lauded Epic's support. In 2023, Remedy's communications director, Thomas Puha, publicly commended Epic's production team for their commitment and invaluable feedback throughout Alan Wake 2's development, reinforcing the strong collaborative relationship between the two companies.

The Journey of Control and Alan Wake 2's Platform Availability

Remedy's previous title, Control, also launched as an Epic Games Store exclusive before its eventual release on Steam. However, Control was published by 505 Games. For Alan Wake 2, which debuted on Epic in October 2023, the decision to remain exclusive to the platform continues to fuel discussions around sales performance versus creative freedom and financial stability provided by such deals.
