Aswath Damodaran, a distinguished professor at NYU Stern and a leading authority on valuation, has declared his decision to forgo participation in the forthcoming initial public offering (IPO) of SpaceX. The professor, often referred to as the 'Dean of Valuation,' cited several factors influencing his choice, primarily centered on his assessment of the commercial spaceflight enterprise's financial standing and operational vision.

Professor Damodaran articulated his reservations regarding SpaceX's valuation in a detailed commentary shared on social media. He contended that the company's valuation is largely propelled by its compelling narrative rather than concrete financial metrics. A significant point of contention for Damodaran was the ambitious total addressable market (TAM) figures presented for SpaceX, particularly the segment tied to artificial intelligence, which he found to be overly optimistic. While acknowledging Starlink's pivotal role in the company's performance in the preceding year and the potential boost from the Anthropic lease deal for the Colossus datacenter, he also cautioned about potential market conflicts should xAI enter into direct competition with Anthropic. Furthermore, Damodaran expressed apprehension about SpaceX's corporate governance, describing it as lacking essential 'guard rails,' and asserted that the proposed $1.8 trillion valuation is substantially inflated, estimating the true equity value to be between $1.25 trillion and $1.35 trillion. He also highlighted that going public would expose SpaceX to increased market scrutiny and short-selling activities.

This stance by a respected financial expert emerges as the S&P 500 index operator has indicated it will not expedite SpaceX's inclusion by waiving the standard 12-month seasoning period, nor its profitability and public float requirements for newly listed entities. Concurrently, space-themed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have witnessed a notable surge, with assets surpassing $5 billion, as the market anticipates SpaceX's public debut.

In the dynamic realm of finance and innovation, thorough evaluation and a disciplined investment approach remain paramount. While the allure of groundbreaking ventures like SpaceX is undeniable, the insights from seasoned experts remind us that a robust financial foundation and sound governance are crucial for long-term success and investor confidence. Balancing ambitious vision with realistic projections is key to navigating the complexities of the market.
