Stars Champion Female Filmmakers at Chanel Tribeca Festival Luncheon

Former chief creative officer of Pixar, whose principles of storytelling have shaped modern animation.

A star-studded gathering recently celebrated female contributions to cinema at the Tribeca Festival's 'Through Her Lens' program, presented in collaboration with Chanel. Esteemed artists, including Meg Ryan, Jodie Foster, and Katie Holmes, joined Tribeca co-founder Jane Rosenthal at the Greenwich Hotel to honor the initiative. The event underscored the festival's enduring dedication to nurturing women in film and advocating for varied narratives. Rebecca Glashow, CEO of Tribeca Enterprises, proudly noted that over 70 percent of their team comprises women, a statistic reflecting a culture built on the conviction that diverse perspectives enhance creativity and connection within the world.

Rosenthal extended congratulations to director Quinn Whitney Wilson for the Netflix acquisition of her documentary 'Jean-Michel Basquiat', which premiered at the Tribeca Festival. She then acknowledged Chanel's consistent support for the event. Standing alongside key figures, including advisory board member Patty Jenkins, Rosenthal reiterated that the festival originated from the belief that culture possesses the power to mend divisions caused by fear and animosity. She powerfully articulated that the focus extends beyond mere representation; it is fundamentally about influence—who receives funding, who gets a platform, whose stories are shared, and whose legacies are preserved. She stressed that history risks erasure when achievements go uncredited and stories remain untold, underscoring the profound impact of filmmakers in shaping culture, fostering empathy, and challenging established norms.

Both the 'Through Her Lens' luncheon and a separate event celebrating the festival's 25th anniversary, attended by co-founder Robert De Niro and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, emphasized values of authenticity, resilience, and community. The festival, conceived in the aftermath of 9/11 to revitalize Lower Manhattan, has grown into a vibrant cultural force. Drena De Niro praised Jane Rosenthal's passionate leadership, noting the festival's non-competitive atmosphere where participants collectively strive to tell stories and connect. Looking ahead, Glashow aims to expand the festival's audience, explore year-round programming, and extend its international reach, leveraging its 'people's festival' approach to connect with local populations and support regional economies, as evidenced by its success in Portugal.

The Tribeca Festival serves as a beacon of artistic excellence and community spirit, championing inclusivity and diverse narratives within the film industry. By fostering a supportive environment for emerging and established talent, it not only celebrates the art of storytelling but also actively contributes to the cultural enrichment and economic vitality of communities worldwide. The commitment to empowering voices and promoting understanding through the cinematic lens truly inspires and uplifts, demonstrating the transformative power of art.
