Tasveer Film Festival Unveils Expansive 21st Edition Lineup

Seattle's renowned Tasveer Film Festival & Market is set to host its 21st edition from October 13-18, presenting an impressive collection of 136 films originating from 16 different nations. The festival will commence with the West Coast premiere of Sarmad Sultan Khoosat's 'Lali,' a film previously recognized at the Berlinale Panorama.

Exploring Diverse Narratives and Cultural Heritage

The festival's diverse selection, presented in over 25 languages, features narratives from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tibet, and their respective diasporas. United under the theme 'Bring Your Story Home,' the festival will once again be hosted at the Tasveer Film Center in Seattle's Columbia City neighborhood for its second consecutive year.

Key Trends and Featured Films at This Year's Festival

Several compelling trends emerge in the 2026 lineup, including a significant emphasis on women-led personal stories, a powerful surge in animation, and a preference among filmmakers for visual storytelling over explicit dialogue. The program also features four films dedicated to athletes, teams, and their families, delving into themes of class, gender, and belonging—issues that Tasveer has consistently explored for over two decades. Additionally, the festival continues its tradition of showcasing LGBTQ+ cinema, with 12 films from six countries.

Highlighted Premieres and Special Screenings

Among the notable films are 'Mayilaa,' directed by Semmalar Annam, making its North American premiere as the centerpiece film. Other significant entries include the documentary 'Breaking the Code' by Ben Rekhi, 'The Chair,' an animated feature by Triparna Maiti premiering in Washington State, and the festival's closing film, Nepal's Oscar submission 'Elephants in the Fog,' directed by Abinash Bikram Shah, also a North American premiere.

Leadership and Local Connections

Aparna Purohit, CEO of Aamir Khan Productions, will serve as the chief guest and head of the jury for both the festival and market. This year's edition boasts 20 world premieres, four North American premieres, and four U.S. premieres. A number of selections have direct ties to Washington state, including 'Gaa Ghar' ('Home'), 'The Turning Point,' 'Three Sisters,' 'Eka,' and 'Riding Time.'

A Bold Shift in South Asian Cinema

Rita Meher, the festival's director and co-founder of Tasveer, expressed her enthusiasm for the lineup, noting, 'I have been programming this festival for 21 years, and I am still not over this lineup. 136 films, 35 world and North America premieres, filmmakers coming in from 16 countries. The sports films, the queer stories, the animation, all of it arrived with a boldness that tells me something has shifted in South Asian cinema.'

Tasveer Film Market: Fostering New Talent and Industry Connections

The Tasveer Film Market, running from October 13-15, marks its third year as North America's premier global market for South Asian film. This year, it integrates the Co-Production Market Selects program, pitch sessions through the Tasveer Film Fund, industry panels, fireside chats, and networking events. Four filmmakers will receive a $35,000 grant each from the Film Fund to support their upcoming projects.

Community Engagement and Support

Meher extended an invitation to all, stating, 'We are welcoming filmmakers, industry leaders, and audiences from all over the world, whether they're flying in from Mumbai or coming from just down Rainier Avenue. Then the market sends four of these filmmakers home with funding to make the next one. The public is welcome to join us–come be part of it.' The festival's 21st edition is backed by public funders such as King County, the City of Seattle, and the Port of Seattle, with additional support from organizations like AARP, 4 Culture, and the ACLU of Washington. The awards are independently sponsored by the RAGS Foundation.

Tasveer's Enduring Mission and Expansion

For over two decades, the nonprofit Tasveer has been dedicated to providing a platform for South Asian storytellers across various media. Since 2002, its mission has focused on highlighting stories concerning gender, sexuality, caste, class, religion, and race that often lack representation elsewhere. In 2025, the organization expanded into exhibition by transforming Columbia City's former Ark Lodge Cinemas into the Tasveer Film Center, which now screens films daily.
