Workiva Soars: Q2 Triumph & Accelerated Growth Trajectory
Exceptional Financial Performance: Q2 Revenue Surpasses Projections
Workiva's financial results for the second quarter of 2026 were robust, with reported revenues reaching $255 million, a 19% increase compared to the previous year. This figure comfortably surpassed the company's own forecasts by $3 million. The impressive performance was primarily fueled by substantial growth in subscription revenues and enhanced operational efficiency, which together contributed to a significant boost in profitability. Specifically, subscription revenue climbed 19% to $236 million, while professional services revenue saw a 12% rise to $19 million, driven by unexpectedly strong demand for XBRL services. Chief Financial Officer Barbara Larson noted that foreign exchange fluctuations had a negligible impact on growth during this period, a contrast to the favorable conditions observed in the preceding four quarters.
Achieving Margin Targets Ahead of Schedule: A Testament to Efficiency
The company recorded a non-GAAP operating margin of 16.8%, which exceeded the upper end of its projections by 180 basis points. This represents a remarkable 1,300 basis point improvement from the second quarter of 2025. In response to this stellar performance, Workiva revised its full-year non-GAAP operating margin forecast upwards to approximately 18%. This adjustment signifies that the company is now expected to meet its 2027 operating model target a full year ahead of schedule, underscoring its commitment to disciplined financial management and operational excellence.
Expanding Customer Base and Enhanced Contract Value
Workiva continues to demonstrate healthy growth in its customer base, ending the quarter with 6,750 clients, an increase of 283 from the prior year. The company maintained a strong gross retention rate of 97%, surpassing its 96% target, and achieved a net retention rate of 111%. Larson highlighted that constant-currency net retention remained consistently above Workiva's 110% objective. The value of current remaining performance obligations, representing anticipated revenue over the next 12 months, grew by 18% year-over-year to $789 million, despite a minor one-percentage-point negative impact from foreign currency.
Deepening Customer Relationships and Multi-Solution Adoption
The company also reported a notable increase in larger customer engagements. Contracts valued at over $300,000 annually surged by 34% year-over-year to 656, while those exceeding $500,000 grew by 33% to 276. A significant 76% of Workiva's subscription revenue now originates from customers utilizing multiple solutions, an increase from 71% a year ago, indicating deeper integration and value derived from its platform. CEO Julie Iskow emphasized that despite a dynamic market influenced by evolving regulations and increased scrutiny on AI governance, demand for Workiva's solutions remained strong. She acknowledged that deals now involve more rigorous review processes, but affirmed that Workiva's teams are well-prepared to navigate these complexities, leading to shorter deal cycles and a surge in new customer additions, particularly with larger, multi-solution contracts.
Innovations in Platform, AI, and Industry-Specific Solutions
Management underscored the increasing demand for a unified platform capable of integrating financial reporting, governance, risk, compliance, and sustainability workflows. Iskow noted that financial leaders are under pressure to manage data and AI effectively, automate processes, deliver timely insights, and ensure auditability within an intricate regulatory landscape. Workiva has observed growth across all its offerings, including financial reporting, fund reporting, GRC, and sustainability tools. The company cited examples of clients extending their use of the platform for diverse applications such as regulatory compliance, multi-entity reporting, controls management, tax reporting, enterprise risk, and sustainability disclosures. In financial services, Workiva is expanding its footprint in the U.S. and Europe, with encouraging traction for its Fund Reporting products, especially among large enterprises. Sustainability initiatives are also driving demand, as organizations seek to connect financial and non-financial reporting to meet requirements like CSRD, ISSB, and California's SB 253, often leading to the adoption of financial reporting solutions.
Advancing AI Capabilities and Premium Tier Adoption
Workiva recently rolled out advanced AI features within its premium solution tiers, including specialized agents for sustainability disclosure, financial tie-out, and disclosure peer benchmarking. The introduction of the Workiva MCP Gateway provides a governed connectivity layer, enabling seamless integration between Workiva data and workflows with enterprise AI tools, all while preserving identity controls, permissions, governance, and data lineage. While adoption of these premium tiers is still in its early stages, it is gaining momentum. Iskow reported that these tiers command a price premium of over 20%, with customers frequently upgrading at renewal or even during contract periods to access AI and other cutting-edge functionalities.
Positive Outlook and Strategic Capital Management
For the third quarter, Workiva anticipates total revenue between $260 million and $262 million, with a non-GAAP operating margin projected at 17% to 17.5%. Services revenue is expected to show a slight increase compared to Q3 2025. The full-year revenue forecast stands at $1.040 billion to $1.044 billion, with subscription revenue anticipated to grow by approximately 19% year-over-year, and services revenue expected to see a modest increase. The full-year non-GAAP operating margin is projected to be around 18%, and free cash flow margin guidance has been raised by 100 basis points to approximately 21%. Larson clarified that the second-half outlook assumes stable foreign exchange rates consistent with June 2026 levels, minimizing currency impact on projected revenue growth. As of June 30, Workiva held $815 million in cash equivalents and marketable securities. The company repurchased 2.49 million Class A shares for $123 million during the quarter, with $106 million remaining under its $350 million authorization. Despite achieving its 2027 operating margin target early, Workiva is not revising its 2030 financial framework, choosing instead to focus on disciplined investment, sales productivity, platform selling, and exploring growth avenues across its diverse portfolio and international markets.
